A Framework for Project Management
“A Foundation for Delivering Successful Project Results”
(Beginner/Intro Workshop)
This project management workshop is a learner-based course where participants experience growth in project management knowledge through group case assignments, hands-on exercises and directed discussion of basic project management concepts. Each course activity will give participants the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance their project management skills. Up to 70 % of the course time is devoted to learner-based activities.
Prerequisite:
The workshop is designed for:
Those who have not been exposed to project management methodologies, concepts, and practices.
Functional managers, project team leaders, and project team members migrating to some form of a project management environment.
With essential instruction and direction, participants are afforded the opportunity to be exposed to the following project management concepts through discussion and completion of the following key topics and exercises:

Review your challenges and the main common causes of project failure… how to avoid them
The benefit of project management (to the organization and the project manager)
The role of the project manager, and recognizing the successful project manager
The difference between projects and production/operations
Project
Management Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling,
Closing)
- Includes a Project Management Roadmap with key
requirements and deliverables for each process

Project Management Knowledge areas (Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Risk, Contract/Procurement, Human Resources, Communications, & Integration)
Characteristics of a high performance project team and receiving buy in from project team members
Organizational impacts to projects
Key Exercises
Write an effective scope statement
Build a work breakdown structure (WBS) to identify work to be completed
Sequence project activities and determine project dependencies
Develop accurate estimates
Calculate the critical path
Determine cost and schedule risk
Identify the elements of a legally binding contract and differences between Fixed Price versus Cost Plus Percentage of Cost contracts
Recognize interpersonal skills needed to manage a project successfully in the participant’s organization, evaluate their skills, and identify gaps/strengths
Measure project performance variances
Develop and maintain a strong project team environment
Communicate an effective project status to project stakeholders
